Elizabethan Food

The Elizabethan food and drink varied most of the time according to how much wealth you had. During this Era meat was the main sign of wealth and money, but as the population began to increase the meat was being support by inventions and agricultural techniques. During this Era the New World was founded by Columbus, and since he found the New World then England began to get more ingredients to cook with. There was also a huge increase of foods that they were able to get for example, they started to eat more fruits, using sugar more, and also using the honey from bee hives. The only time that these people would stuff their face with food would have to be during huge parties, which were as comenly known as banquets.
The Elizabethan food was usually prepared using these techniques.
  • Salting
  • Fried
  • Boiling
  • Baking
  • Smoking
  • Spit Roasting
Most of the food purchased during this Era was usually during either markets or fairs. A lot of cooking mostly done over a open flame. The most useful cooking utensils were:
  • Pots
  • Pans
  • Skittles
  • Cauldrons
Another very useful utensil was the mortal and pedestal, especially if the cook was going to use a variety of herbs and/or spices.
The ways to prepare food was mainly used by using:
  • Knives
  • Meat Scissors
  • Ladles
  • Meat Forks
For baking the bakers would use a baking tray that was made out of hardened pastry, these hardened pastry trays were called a "coffin".
